Program Objectives

The Children’s Breakfast Clubs have five general program objectives:

Objective #1

Provide children with nutritious, well-balanced and appetizing breakfast meals prepared in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide.

Strategies:

1. Ensure daily menu contains food from each of the four food groups: grains, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats and other proteins

2. Plan monthly menu using a wide variety of meal selections, including foods reflecting the ethnic and religious customs of each community 

3. Provide children with alternate choices to maintain balanced nutrition.

Objective #2

Encourage children to develop healthy nutritional, behavioural and personal hygiene habits.

Strategies:

1. Provide an example of a nutritious, balanced meal.

2. Ensure that children wash hands before eating and practice other appropriate hygiene habits.

3. Ensure that children eat meal in a comfortable, social atmosphere, seated at tables with adequate supervision.

4. Post nutrition-related materials in each Club to educate children about proper diet.

Objective #3

Provide children with emotional support.

Strategies:

1. Provide nurturing, caring atmosphere where staff and volunteers provide children with an emotionally stable, secure and welcoming environment

2. Ensure that Breakfast Club staff knows each child by name, and celebrate birthdays as a group.

3. Allow children to assist with menu planning and monthly fundraising activities to encourage ownership and responsibility to their Club.

Objective #4

Encourage and develop the skills of staff, volunteers and other community members.

Strategies:

1. Provide staff with monthly training on nutrition, positive coping strategies, safety, child welfare, first aid, food handling and anti-racism.

2. Provide staff with on-going support, on-side supervision and regular feedback.

3. Conduct regular evaluation to enable continual goal development.

4. Hire staff from community where club is located.

5. Ensure that volunteers are properly orientated.

Objective #5

Provide social and intellectual stimulation.

Strategies:

1. Offer arts and crafts, games, homework assistance, educational television and instructional videos.

2. Encourage children to read or browse through books available at each Club. Encourage volunteers to read to children.

3. Continue to develop “Celebrity Chef” program to reinforce positive role modeling and to allow children to meet and interact with people from variety of backgrounds – teachers, principals, sports heroes, police, public service employees.

4. Investigate all opportunities that would expose children to experiences that they would otherwise not enjoy.
